Craft: Watercolor Art

Create a watercolor masterpiece!

Is it magic, art, or science? Maybe it’s all three! Engaging your child’s natural sense of curiosity is a terrific way to encourage scientific thought. This activity supports the appreciation of unique art and encourages out-of-the-box thinking using just 3 ordinary ingredients. From building your child’s hand muscles as they squeeze the glue onto the paper, to the dexterity it takes to sprinkle the salt, and even the inventive technique of using a straw to soak up the water colors for the design are all skills that your child can develop during this activity. This may seem simple to us, however the outcome is mesmerizing to a young child as they watch the magic happen.

Literacy Connection: Talk to your child about the creation of art and how any kind of art can inspire creativity in other areas of life. The Noisy Paint Box: The Colors and Sounds of Kandinsky’s Abstract Art, written by Barb Rosenstock, is a great book to help begin a conversation with your child about inspiration and creativity.
