‘Tis the season!
The festivities of the holidays are perfect for spending family time together making art and creating happy memories. Simply use this activity to help your child transform a flat piece of paper into a magical Christmas tree while sharing family stories. Cutting, folding, and pressing down are excellent for small hands to develop motor skills, and when the tree is done, your child can enjoy decorating it using favorite art materials.
Supplies:
– Hole Punch
– Scissors
– Hot glue gun
– Glue stick
– Green construction paper
– Small multi-colored pom poms
– 6-8” length of yarn
Directions:
1. Turn your rectangle paper into a square by folding the bottom corner of construction paper up and over to the opposite side and pressing down making sure sides meet and match. Cut off top section of page to make the square.
2. While the page is still folded, cut multiple slits in the page starting at the fold and going towards the edge, being careful to leave about a half inch margin from the end of your cut to the edge of the page.
3. Open up the paper and turn it so the longest cuts are at the bottom and the shortest one is at the top.
4. Using a glue stick, put glue on the end of each slit and fold in toward the middle fold, matching and overlapping the corners from the opposite sides. Do this for each slit until you reach the top one. Fold the top section down or cut it off.
5. Using your glue gun, apply glue to the top of the tree and attach the length of yarn. Place the larger yellow pom pom (or a star!) on top of where the yarn attached.
6. Work your way down each “branch” applying hot glue and small pom poms or sequins at the ends.
7. You did it! Go hang your new ornament on your Christmas tree!
