Even if you\u2019re just starting out, we\u2019ve got some tips for both children and caregivers who may be anxious about this rite of passage of learning to ride a bike.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Start with the right bike. <\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ideally, your child will be able to stand straddling the main bar with both feet planted firmly on the ground. If only your child\u2019s tiptoes touch the ground when they get nervous and drop their feet, they will not feel safe. If you\u2019ve already purchased a \u201cgrow into\u201d bike, see if you can borrow a smaller one from a friend or neighbor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Safety is key<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ensure that your child is wearing proper safety gear. Helmets (research how to find the best fit for maximum safety) are essential, but knee and elbow pads may also ease your child\u2019s mind (and the caregiver\u2019s mind) and will definitely reduce the risk of injury.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Give yourself space. <\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Parking lots and cul-de-sacs can work well for learning, but also consider public tennis or basketball courts nearby. This will give your child a large, open space in which to practice and greatly reduce the likelihood of potholes or other cars or traffic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Go to a large, open space that has a smooth surface. Parking lots and cul-de-sacs can work well for this, but also consider public tennis or basketball courts nearby. This will give your child a large, open space in which to practice. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Set limits. <\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There may be some inevitable anxiety during this process. Set time limits, and don\u2019t be ashamed to incentivize a can-do, positive attitude and willingness to try.
