Depending on a few factors like your child\u2019s age, maturity level, and developmental progress, your child may or may not be able to tell you what they need in terms of self-care. No doubt, though, your little one needs as much self-care as you do.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Age doesn\u2019t matter when it comes to self-care, because no matter what age, everyone needs time to themselves. Schools, siblings, extra-curricular activities, social expectations, or any day-to-day factor can all cause burnout in your child. So here are ways you can encourage and prioritize self-care for your kids.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Allow Your Children Their Alone Time<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even children get tired of listening and following instructions all day. Your little ones need a rest so their brains can process the day\u2019s activities. If your child cannot process the day in their own ways, usually through the freedom that alone time offers, then they can experience burnout. Without a proper recovery period each day, your child may become overstimulated, which may result in becoming irritable.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consider asking your little one, \u201cWould you like some alone time?\u201d As long as this recovery period isn\u2019t associated with punishment, a child usually will accept it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Offer Your Children Space from Their Siblings<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Siblings are known for their rivalry and giving each other a hard time. And while this is natural, it can also result in the need for distance from each other in order to focus on self-care. However, children don\u2019t always have the same needs as their siblings. Where one child may find self-care in quality time with her parents, another may find self-care in reading her favorite chapter book alone and uninterrupted by siblings.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, some children need to be apart from their siblings in order to discover new things on their own. No matter how your child chooses to enjoy her time, as long as she\u2019s offered time away from her siblings when she needs it, she\u2019ll be ready to rejoin her siblings in no time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Encourage Healthy Habits<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because children\u2019s developmental milestones rely so heavily on what they eat and how active they are, prioritizing an overall healthy diet and an active lifestyle is super important. Incorporating healthier habits in routine self-care could look like a child being able to choose his own snack from a selection of healthy options, or choosing to play outside without electronics before he starts his homework and chores.
