It’s a fair assumption to say that children frequently assume the wide world of food production starts and ends with you, the parent.

However, for a child to grasp the full concept of where food actually comes from, they have to start with bite-sized informative pieces in order to digest the full picture. While lessons on where food comes from can be helpful, they’re not always the best teaching methods when left as the sole resource for information for your child’s growing and ever-inquisitive brain. Rather than depending on just school lessons, here are some fun activities that will teach your kids where food comes from!

Visit a Farm

Visiting a local farm is one of the best methods for teaching kids where food comes from. A farm can be viewed by the child as a large-scale garden that can appropriately feed a whole bunch of people.

Additionally, visiting a farm will show a child that not all food grows the same way – some foods grow on trees, some grow on vines, others grow on tall stalks, on bushes, or even in the ground where we can’t see them! On a farm, a child will be able to see all the moving parts of what makes a farm operate from the farmer who plants and waters the seeds, the tractors that pick the crops, to the chickens and pigs that eat all the scraps. It’s important for a child to understand that hard, regular work goes into growing crops for their hungry bellies!

Start Your Own Garden

Like visiting a local farm, starting a family or neighborhood garden is another amazing method to teach kids where food comes from. It’s one thing to see a farmer take seeds and plant and water them until the crops grow big, but it’s another thing to allow the children to partake in the process. Having your child pick out their own fruits and veggies, plant the seeds in the dirt, and water the crops every day offers him a unique experience that will also teach him about how long it truly takes to grow a crop from start to harvest.

It’s also incredibly fun to harvest your own crops and help make delicious recipes out of them!

Read Stories About Food

Books are an imaginative way for children to process how food is created and produced for the world. Not everyone has the same experiences with food, so this is the perfect opportunity to turn to books to broaden a child’s perception of how food is dealt with globally.

As a child processes where food comes from, take this as the opportunity to touch on a few cultural lessons on how different geological locations around the world are known for certain foods, and how we share food by importing and exporting foods with other countries.

Let Your Kids Help You Cook as Often as Possible

Finally, the last activity that you can utilize that will teach your child about where food comes from is by cooking together with your children! If your kids have learned first-hand where food comes from by visiting farms and plating their own crops, and reading about food in stories, there’s nothing more fun than taking your new understanding and applying it to yummy recipes that you can make and serve up to the whole family.

It’s important for children to know that vegetables don’t just appear on a plate cooked and prepared. The process, much like growing food, takes a little bit of time and patience. If your kids are able, have them help you prepare the food by doing simple things like snapping beans, peeling onions, or stirring mixtures!

However you choose to teach your children about food, remember that it should always be fun as well as informative!

KIDS ‘R’ KIDS LEGACY WEST PRESCHOOL PROGRAM

Are you interested in learning more about how Kids ‘R’ Kids Academy of Legacy West can teach your preschooler about cooperation?
