Especially during the holiday season, many parents stress about how their children will react to presents they get. Children can be blunt with their reactions to how many and what kind of presents they receive. Here are a few ways to help raise an appreciative child!

Set a Good Example

One of the best and easiest ways to raise an appreciative child is to be an appreciative adult! When others get you a gift or do something kind for you, make sure to take the opportunity to thank them. When your preschooler witnesses you being appreciative, use it as an opportunity to talk to them about why it is important!

Start Small

When teaching your child to be appreciative, start small! Teaching them and holding them accountable to saying ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ is a really good start. It might take awhile for them to say it on their own, but after some gentle, persistent reminders from you, they will come off as very polite to others.

Don’t Spoil Them

If you want your preschooler to be appreciative of gifts especially, try not to spoil them. While one toy at this store and some candy at another don’t seem like much, when you add up all of the small things it becomes a lot. Children who react well to you saying “no” are going to be much more grateful for the gifts they are given.

Give Them Responsibility

Giving your child some weekly chores teaches them responsibility, but it also makes them appreciate all they have been given! When your child sees what goes into making the bed or loading the dishwasher, they are more likely to be grateful the next time someone does the chores for them. Additionally, if your child earns allowance from chores, you can help them make the connection that gifts are paid for with someone else’s hard earned money.

We hope these ideas will help in your effort to raise a more appreciative preschooler, especially with the holidays coming up! Even if your child does say something embarrassing after receiving a gift, remember that they are young and generally aren’t trying to be mean. Take it in stride and keep working on gratefulness in the new year!

If you enjoyed this blog and want to read more, click below for our blog from last month!

Preschoolers and Science

Want to learn more about Kids ‘R’ Kids Learning Academy of Riverstone located in Sugar Land, Texas?
