Whether you’re at the beach with the family watching seagulls trying to steal french fries, or in the city watching pigeons hopping around waste bins, birds are everywhere. Birds can be so intriguing that we can’t help but stop and just observe.

Preschoolers are naturally curious, so here are some ways you can turn their curiosities about birds into wonderful lessons.

Build a bird’s nest

While not every bird builds its own nest (some steal nests from other birds!), most birds do. Bird nests can be found almost anywhere – in trees, in corners of buildings, on light posts, under bridges, bird boxes, balconies, farm equipment, or bushes. For this activity, gather your children and take a walk out in nature. Bring a bag with you to gather the things you’ll find.

What You’ll Need:

Bag to collect sticks

Sticks, leaves, moss, etc.

Paper plates

Glue

As you walk through nature, pick up sticks, moss, leaves, or other natural elements your kid finds and place them in your bag. Once you’re confident you have collected enough things to build a bird’s nest, head back to your project table! Lay your paper plate out flat, and begin building your bird’s nest by gluing the sticks, leaves, and other items in a circular shape around the plate. Voila! Once the nest has dried, you’ve got yourself a handmade bird’s nest!

Learn About Bird Sounds

Not all birds make beautiful songs as songbirds do. Some make caw and others hoo! Some birds sing while other birds call to each other.

With pictures and sounds, show your little ones what different types of birds sound like. The Audubon website is a wonderful place to start with pictures and accompanying sounds. Your child can spend some time learning about melodies created by birds, contact calls, flight calls, and trills.

Go Birdwatching with Your Preschoolers!

Birdwatching can be done almost anywhere – in your yard, in the park, in the city, or even from your window! It’s fun to watch the birds around you fly about.

As you observe birds, make note with your children of what they’re doing:

Did they suddenly fly away when someone came near to them?

Are they gather food for their babies?

Are they alone, or with other birds?

Did they pause for a quick bite and then fly away? Or do you think they live close by?

Are they watching people walk by?

Are they warning other birds of approaching threats?

What colors are the birds you see?

Additionally, technology has made it even easier to birdwatch when you can’t easily go outside! Watch birds live here! You and your little ones can put on a live video and observe how the birds eat, call to each other, and fly away when they’re full.

KIDS ‘R’ KIDS RIVERSTONE PRESCHOOL PROGRAM

Are you interested in learning more about how Kids ‘R’ Kids Academy of Riverstone can teach your preschooler?
