One thing is for sure: children meet developmental milestones at their own pace. One child starts pedaling a bike long before he can zip a jacket, and another learns to undress before he learns his colors. Don’t sweat it; your preschooler will make progress in due time. Here are some activities you can do to guide your little one towards developing their fine motor skills:
Make a Game Out Of It
Any activity that helps your child work on her fine motor skills can seem arduous (to you and them) if you overdo it. Make a game out of unzipping their back pack a few times, praise her when she zips up her jacket, and use small rewards (stickers, M&Ms, etc.) to encourage the activity. Children know when they aren’t able to get something right the first time. Help show them their progress along the way!
Transferable Skills
Activities which allow a child to pinch or pick up small items with their thumb, index finger, and middle finger (tripod grasp), contribute to your child’s ability to correctly hold a pencil when writing. Try activities with clothes pins or tongs where children have to move an item (try a cotton ball!) using the tongs from one bowl to another. Allow young kids to pick off stickers from a sticker sheet and place them on a new piece of paper.
Hand Strength
It might be a bit messy, but letting your child play with playdough will help her develop strength in her hands for all fine motor skills. If you want to avoid the mess and you have leftover Easter eggs, let your child practice opening the eggs. For some added practice, help them put the eggs back together again! When your little one is ready and you have time to oversee, let your child use a child-safe pair of scissors to make cuts on paper or a paper plate.
